Launched in 2001, the Dot NAME universal TLD is the sole TLD meant for personal sites only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are popular by. At the beginning, just third-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to reserve john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased 3rd-level domain names remained functional.
